Are all cryptocurrencies available on Finary?

No, Finary doesn't list every cryptocurrency. Aware that some projects may have less-than-scrupulous intentions, we've put in place a rigorous vetting process for each cryptocurrency before adding it to our platform. Our aim is to avoid listing coins or projects that could turn out to be scams, in order to protect our users and keep our site trustworthy.

What is the market cap of cryptocurrencies?

A cryptocurrency's market cap, calculated by multiplying the number of tokens in circulation by their current price, is a key indicator. It determines the ranking of digital coins, reflecting their market value and popularity.

How do you compare the market cap of cryptocurrencies?

Cryptocurrency market caps fall into three segments, reflecting their size and stability in the market:

• Large-cap cryptocurrencies: Over 10 billion dollars. These coins, like Bitcoin and Ethereum, are pillars of the market, offering stability and security to investors thanks to their recognition and well-developed ecosystems.
• Mid-cap cryptocurrencies: Between 1 and 10 billion dollars. These assets are in a growth phase, having shown significant potential without yet reaching the status of market leaders. They represent a balance between opportunity and risk.
• Small-cap cryptocurrencies: Less than 1 billion dollars. Considered emerging, they carry high growth potential but come with increased volatility and risk.

Market cap lets you compare the market value of cryptocurrencies. For a deeper analysis, though, it should be paired with other indicators such as trading volume and liquidity. While significant, market cap shouldn't be the only criterion for investment decisions, since manipulation is possible and can affect its reliability.

How are cryptocurrency prices calculated?

We collect up-to-date prices for cryptocurrencies from a range of exchanges, based on the trading pairs available. We then convert that value into Euros.

How are cryptocurrency valuations calculated?

Market cap of a single cryptocurrency

The market cap of a crypto asset comes from multiplying that asset's current reference price by its circulating quantity. Let's illustrate with Ethereum's market cap:

• Let (P) be Ethereum's latest reference price according to Finary in euros.
• Let (Q) be the amount of Ethereum currently in circulation.
• Let (M) be the calculated market cap for Ethereum.

For this example, let's take (P) = 3,000 euros per ETH and (Q) = 120,000,000 ETH.

• M = P * Q
• M = 3,000 euros per ETH * 120,000,000 ETH = 360,000,000,000 euros

As a result, Ethereum's market cap reaches 360 billion euros.

Total market cap (Global) ****The total market cap of crypto assets, shown at the top of Finary under "Global Market Cap," is the sum of the market caps of all crypto assets that meet the conditions specified here.

Why does the price of cryptocurrencies vary from one exchange to another?

You may notice that cryptocurrencies listed on different exchanges have different prices. The reasons behind this are complex, but to keep it simple, cryptocurrencies are traded on different exchanges and in different markets, with economic conditions, liquidity, trading pairs, and offerings (for example, derivatives / leverage) that all influence the price in their own way.

What is an altcoin?

Bitcoin, launched as the first cryptocurrency, opened the door to a new era of digital money thanks to its openly accessible source code. Many developers took advantage of that opportunity to create their own digital coins, sometimes making minor tweaks and sometimes sweeping changes to the original concept. These new cryptocurrencies, though inspired by Bitcoin, can vary greatly in terms of technology (proof of stake, proof of history, proof of work), application, and governance. They're collectively known as altcoins, a term that covers every digital coin launched after Bitcoin, whether they're close relatives like Litecoin or radically different.

What is an ICO?

The Initial Coin Offering, or ICO, is a go-to funding method for blockchain startups, allowing them to raise funds through a process similar to crowdfunding. Investors contribute to a project in exchange for tokens or coins specific to that project, often in Bitcoin or Ethereum. This practice peaked between 2017 and early 2018, mainly on the Ethereum platform using the ERC-20 standard.

However, the intervention of the U.S. SEC, clarifying the rules for raising funds for crypto assets, significantly slowed this momentum by introducing stricter regulations, thereby reducing the number of new ICOs.

Faced with the inherent volatility of the crypto market, stablecoins were developed as a solution for maintaining a stable value. Pegged to fiat currencies like the U.S. dollar (USDC, USDT), the Euro, or other stable values, these cryptocurrencies offer a reassuring alternative for transactions and investments. It relies on smart contracts, which are computer programs that automatically execute transactions when certain conditions are met. A cryptocurrency's 24h trading volume refers to the amount of that cryptocurrency that has been bought and sold across all exchanges over the past 24 hours on the spot market. For example, if the 24h volume for Ethereum is 15 billion dollars, that means 15 billion dollars' worth of Ether changed hands across all exchanges over the past 24 hours.
