What are the hidden fees of a life insurance policy?

The hidden fees of a life insurance policy are those that are not always highlighted by traditional providers.

These include deposit fees (up to 3% on average), switching fees (around 1% per transaction), ETF-specific transaction fees (up to 0.10% per order), and additional fees for managed or discretionary portfolios (around 0.5%/year on top). On top of that, there are commission retrocessions: a portion of the fund management fees (mutual funds, UCITS) is paid back to the distributor, which can steer recommendations toward more expensive funds. In total, the average recurring cost of a unit-linked life insurance contract in France is estimated at around 3% per year (source: Good Value for Money).

At Finary Life, the structure is simple: a single annual management fee applies, with no entry, deposit, switching, transaction, or exit fees.

What are the fees on Finary Life?

Finary Life offers a transparent fee structure, among the lowest on the market:
- Unit-linked fund management fees: 0.50%/year
- Netissima euro fund management fees: 0.75%/year - Entry fees: 0%
- Deposit fees: 0%
- Switching fees: 0%
- Transaction fees (including on ETFs): 0%
- Managed portfolio fees: 0%
- Exit or withdrawal fees: 0%

Only the fees specific to the underlying funds (ETF and fund TERs) apply on top. These fees are built into the fund's performance and are not charged separately.

What is the difference between contract fees and fund fees?

Contract fees are charged by the insurer for the administrative management of your life insurance policy. At Finary Life, they amount to 0.50%/year on unit-linked funds and 0.75%/year on the euro fund.

Fund fees (also called TER, for Total Expense Ratio) are the internal management fees of each fund or ETF you invest in. They are deducted directly from the fund's performance and do not appear on your fee statement. For example, the ETFs used in Finary Life's managed portfolio have an average TER of 0.25%/year.

The true total cost of your life insurance is therefore the sum of both: contract fees + fund fees. That's why it's important to compare policies on both levels.

Are there switching or withdrawal fees on Finary Life?

No. Finary Life charges no switching or withdrawal fees. You can change your fund allocation at any time at no cost, and make partial or full withdrawals without penalty. By comparison, the market average is around 1% per switch and 0.5% in exit fees. This is a significant advantage for investors who want to adjust their allocation based on market conditions.

What are the fees for investing in ETFs through a life insurance policy?

In most life insurance contracts, investing in ETFs involves multiple layers of fees: the contract's unit-linked management fees (0.5% to 1%/year), transaction fees per ETF order (often 0.10% per transaction), and the ETF's internal fees (TER). At Finary Life, there are no transaction fees on ETFs. Only the contract management fees (0.50%/year) and the fund's TER apply. With over 120 ETFs available covering equities, bonds, thematics, and commodities, Finary Life offers one of the most competitive ETF selections on the life insurance market.

How much in fees do you pay on a 10,000 euro life insurance investment?

Let's take a concrete example: 10,000 euros invested in equities with an average annual return of 8% over 30 years.

- With Finary Life (0.50% management fees/year), your capital reaches 87,550 euros after 30 years.

- With a traditional life insurance policy (3% average annual fees), your capital only reaches 43,219 euros over the same period.

Result: Finary Life earns you 44,331 euros more, or +103% compared to a traditional contract, at equivalent market performance. The difference comes solely from fees.
